The Life Journey of Li Bai, the Immortal Poet
Li Bai (701-762), courtesy name Taibai, art name Qinglian Jushi, is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty. Together with Du Fu, they are known as "Li-Du."
I. Early Years (701-725): Youth in Shu
Born in Suyab (modern-day Kyrgyzstan), Li Bai moved with his father to Qinglian Township, Mianzhou, Sichuan at age five. In his youth, he mastered both swordsmanship and letters, harboring the ambition: "One day the great Peng bird shall rise with the wind, soaring ninety thousand miles."
II. Wandering the Realm (725-742)
In 725, Li Bai left Sichuan with sword in hand, bidding farewell to his homeland. He traveled down the Yangtze River through Chongqing, Jiangling, Dongting Lake, Jinling, and Yangzhou, befriending scholars and composing poetry that spread his fame across the land.
III. Years in Chang'an (742-744): Imperial Poet
In 742, Emperor Xuanzong summoned Li Bai to serve as a Hanlin Academician. He famously composed the "Qingping Diao" poems while intoxicated: "Clouds remind me of her garments, flowers of her face." However, court intrigue led to his dismissal with a golden severance gift.
IV. Great Wanderings (744-755)
After leaving Chang'an, Li Bai met Du Fu in Luoyang and later traveled with Gao Shi. This was his most prolific period, producing masterpieces including "Bring in the Wine," "A Dream of Tianmu Mountain," and "The Hard Road to Shu."
V. War and Final Years (755-762)
During the An Lushan Rebellion, Li Bai joined Prince Lin's staff and was implicated and exiled to Yelang. Pardoned at Baidi City, he wrote: "The monkeys' cries on both banks never cease, yet my light boat has passed ten thousand mountains." Li Bai died in Dangtu, Anhui in 762 at the age of 62.
