The Life Journey of Xin Qiji, the Dragon Among Poets
Xin Qiji (1140-1207), courtesy name You'an, art name Jiaxuan, was a native of Jinan, Shandong. A general and the greatest bold-style (haofang) ci poet of the Southern Song, he is paired with Su Shi as "Su-Xin" and hailed as "the Dragon Among Poets."
I. A Youthful Hero (1140-1162)
Born under Jin occupation, Xin Qiji was raised by his grandfather Xin Zan, who secretly nurtured the boy's loyalty to the Song. In 1161, when the Jin emperor invaded south, twenty-one-year-old Xin raised a two-thousand-man militia to fight back. He later joined the larger rebel army led by Geng Jing.
II. The Legendary Capture of a Traitor (1162)
When Geng Jing's deputy Zhang Anguo murdered Geng and defected to the Jin, Xin Qiji took just fifty cavalrymen and rode into a Jin camp of tens of thousands to capture the traitor. He brought Zhang back to the Song court for execution. This exploit became legendary: "His heroic spirit inspired the timid, and even the Emperor sighed three times upon meeting him."
III. Frustration in the Southern Court (1162-1181)
Xin Qiji submitted brilliant military strategies, including the "Ten Essays on Fine Celery" and "Nine Memorials," urging the reconquest of the north. But the Song court favored peace over war. Despite outstanding performance in local posts, he was repeatedly impeached and dismissed. He built the "Jiaxuan" estate in Shangrao, Jiangxi, and turned to poetry.
IV. Years of Idleness (1181-1203)
During twenty years of enforced retirement, Xin composed his greatest ci poems. In "Dance of the Cavalry": "Drunk, I trim the lamp and gaze at my sword — dreaming of the camp with its bugle call. Eight hundred miles of roasted meat for the troops, fifty strings playing frontier tunes — autumn maneuvers on the battlefield." And in "Green Jade Table": "Suddenly turning back — there she stands, in the dimming light of fading lanterns."
V. Unfulfilled Ambition (1203-1207)
Reappointed in 1205, the aging Xin could no longer change the tide. After the failed Kaixi Northern Expedition, he was dismissed again. In 1207, dying of illness at Pianshan, Xin Qiji reportedly cried out with his last breath: "Kill the enemy! Kill the enemy!" He died at sixty-eight, his great ambition unfulfilled.
